Combustion Consulting is taking on its first engagements. Graham has been doing this work for more than 40 years, and rather than pad this page out, we have set out exactly where that experience was built and exactly which numbers each service area moves.

So rather than pad this page out, we would rather show you the method now, and the results as they come.

Sheet 06How an engagement runsFour stages

How working together actually works

So that you know what you are agreeing to before you agree to it.

Engagement sequence  ·  Rev A4 stages
Stage 01A 30 minute call

No charge. By the end of it he will name the two or three places he thinks the parts and service margin is leaking, or tell you plainly that he is not the right person.

Stage 02Diagnostic

A focused review of the sales, aftersales or service position, working from your own numbers, with findings written up.

Stage 03Plan

Objectives, KPIs and a timeline, sized to what the business can absorb rather than to a template.

Stage 04Support through delivery

Hands-on support while the plan is put in place, including training, distributor visits and performance reviews.

Stage 01 costs nothing, commits you to nothing, and lasts 30 minutes

Project work and UK representation

We actively welcome new partnerships. If you're expanding your product range in the UK, or you're a manufacturer not yet represented here, we can act as your local point of contact - managing relationships and ensuring your products are effectively represented.

We also offer guidance and support for, and are eager to undertake industry associated project work.

What we do not take on

Being clear about the edges of the work saves everyone a wasted call.

  • Equipment design, combustion engineering calculations and commissioning. We are commercially and operationally focused, and will happily work alongside your own engineering function or an equipment specialist.
  • Recruitment as an agency. We advise on structure, roles and selection, and we do not place candidates or take placement fees.
  • Marketing, branding, websites and lead generation campaigns.
  • ERP, CRM and parts system implementation. We will specify what the reporting needs to tell you, and leave the build to your systems provider.
  • Regulatory, health and safety, or financial compliance work.
  • Engagements with no access to the underlying numbers. Without the sales, parts and service data there is no way to know whether anything improved, and reporting on that is the point.

Sheet 04.1Method27 measures

The numbers we work on

These are the measures each service area moves. If you already track them, we start from your figures. If you do not, establishing them is the first piece of work.

01

Sales strategy & business development

  • Market share by territory and product line
  • Order intake against forecast, and forecast accuracy
  • Price realisation against list, and where discount goes without a reason
  • Win rate on quoted opportunities
  • New accounts opened against accounts lapsed
  • Enquiry to order conversion, and time to quote
02

Aftersales growth & parts revenue

  • Installed engine population by territory, the denominator for everything else
  • Parts revenue per engine in the field
  • Gross margin split by captive and competitive lines
  • First pick availability, and next day fulfilment against it
  • Exchange and core return take-up against new unit sales
  • Warranty cost per engine, and recovery against the manufacturer
  • Absorption: aftersales gross profit against fixed overhead
03

Service centre & field operations

  • Engineer utilisation and labour recovery against standard times
  • Repairs completed on site, against total attendances
  • Attendance time from callout, and time to repair
  • Jobs completed per engineer per day
  • Rework and repeat visit rate
  • Revenue and gross profit per engineer
04

Distributor & dealer network

  • Territory coverage, and the white space left in it
  • Appointed, authorised and stockist tiers, and what each is actually allowed to do
  • Reorder frequency and stock turns per distributor
  • Share of wallet against competing lines
  • Time from onboarding to first order
  • Training completion against certification requirement
  • Distributor gross margin, as they see it

Several of these are figures most manufacturers cannot produce on request. That is usually where the money is.

Sheet 04.2Founding engagementsTwo days, fixed scope

The two day review

Two days on site, with the sales, parts and service managers interviewed separately, working from your own figures. It stands on its own: a written report you can act on whether or not we ever work together again.

Combustion Consulting is new, and a new consultancy has one thing to prove. So a limited number of first reviews run at a reduced rate, and in return we ask permission to publish the result here, named or anonymised as you prefer. Ask about the terms and we will set them out plainly.

Ask about a founding review  →

What you get

  • Parts gross margin by category, and where discount is going without a reason
  • Service labour recovery and absorption rate, against what the site should be achieving
  • Stock profile: what is not moving, and what the obsolescence is actually costing
  • The distributor picture by territory: who sells, who only stocks, and which agreements are unmanaged
  • A written report with a ranked list of moves, the money attached to each, and who has to do them
  • One presentation to the management team

Anything beyond the review is quoted separately, and is entirely optional.

Fifty years of it, and a rate that reflects a standing start

Graham will tell you on the first call whether your problem is one he has solved before.

How the work runs  ·  Rev AInsight to results
CLEAR INSIGHT ACTIONABLE PLANNING MEASURABLE RESULTS THEORY
01Clear insight

Working from your sales, parts and service figures rather than from an opinion about them.

02Actionable planning

A plan with owners and dates that the business can actually absorb.

The branch marked theory is drawn because it is the one that never gets taken
